Udall Statement on Joint Session Address on Health Care

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Udall, D-N.M, issued the following statement today on President Obama’s joint address to congress on the importance of reforming health insurance reform:

"President Obama has made it very clear that we have a responsibility to act now to improve access and the affordability to health insurance for the American people, and I agree. One in four New Mexicans today is uninsured and just one major accident away from bankruptcy. While insurance companies continue to reap huge profits those who are insured see their premiums climb higher every year.

"We have a unique opportunity to improve the American health care system and I am confident we can build on the common ground shared by many to cap premiums, prevent companies from dropping patients, and refusing to cover those with preexisting conditions. These are critical steps to eliminating the injustices and disparities in coverage that currently exists. For New Mexico families, the status quo is both unsustainable and unacceptable and I am committed to finding solutions to genuinely reform our system now."
