Udall Statement on Afghan Election

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tom Udall, D-N.M., today issued the following statement in reaction to Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s acceptance of a runoff in the country’s disputed election:

“The United States needs a credible and reliable government in Afghanistan. The corruption and fraud that has been well-documented in this past election are clearly unacceptable and prevent such a government from taking shape.

“I welcome President Karzai’s decision to accept a runoff election in Afghanistan. The Afghan people turned out in record numbers to vote, risking their lives in many cases, and they deserve a legitimate election.”
