Udall Statement Celebrating Black History Month

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tom Udall released the following statement today in honor of Black History Month, which is celebrated in February:

"During Black History Month, we remember the African American champions of equality who sacrificed and fought for liberty and justice as well as the countless contributions by African American scientists, artists, business people, explorers, civic leaders and others who have made our communities, state and nation richer and stronger.

"The great ideal of America is equal opportunity and justice for all. We've made great strides, but we must continue to build on that progress and push for social, political and economic equality. Too many families in New Mexico and across the country still struggle for education and employment opportunities, fairness in our criminal justice system, and to exercise their basic voting rights. As we mark the 40th year of Black History Month we reaffirm our commitment to the march for justice that is at the heart of our history and is the core of our most cherished values."
