Udall Statement on President’s Budget Blueprint
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM), released the following statement today regarding President Obama's 2012 budget proposal:
"The president's budget blueprint reflects the challenges we face in getting our fiscal house in order. He proposes an overall deficit reduction of about $1 trillion while rightly focusing on keeping America competitive by building a new energy economy and investing in education.
"For New Mexico, this budget holds promising investments to further the national security roles of Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories in preventing nuclear proliferation around the world. It also devotes funds to continue cleaning up the radioactive waste in our own backyard.
"The plan also calls for beefed-up border security by recommending more boots on the ground and better technology. Investments like these can help quell the drug violence that hits so close to home and stifle the flow of illegal traffic on our southern border."The administration's budget makes a dent in our national deficit and stays true to our national priorities. I don't agree with everything in it, but it's a solid starting point. The fact remains that to put our nation on a sustainable path of fiscal responsibility no program can be off the table, and we must factor in the costs of our decade-long wars and make our tax system more fair."
