In February 2013, I'll be proud to host the Student Leadership Institute (SLI). Started by my friend and colleague U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman, the SLI is a half-day conference for high school juniors and seniors in New Mexico to discuss policy issues affecting our state and nation. It is my hope that the SLI will increase awareness of government and public policy while encouraging involvement in both.

During the conference, students will attend three of six seminars led by members of my Capitol Hill legislative team. Afterward, the students will have an open forum with me to discuss what they learned during the course of the day and other issues that may concern them. Educators who accompany the students are invited to participate in a session throughout the day focusing on education policy.

For the past 24 years, the SLI has been an annual rotating conference held throughout the state. This year's conference will be held at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. For accommodation purposes the conference is only open to schools in the northern counties, but if you are outside these areas and are interested in attending, please feel free to contact my office.

Each student who participates in the SLI will attend three of six policy seminars that are led by members of my legislative staff. These seminars focus on many of the major issues that we address in Congress. These topics include:

    • Economic Development
    • Immigration Reform
    • Environment
    • Health
    • National Security
    • Budget priorities

Space is limited, so there will be a maximum of three (3) students per high school for this year's SLI. There will be no cost to attend other than transportation expenses to and from the conference site.

** At this time, the Student Leadership Institute has reached capacity **

Thank you for your interest in the SLI. To list your school for a future conference, please contact Gabe Apodaca in my Albuquerque office at (505)-346-6791 or email SLI@tomudall.senate.gov
